In June 1934, shortly after the SS murdered Ernst Röhm, Chief of Staff of the SA, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler ordered that all those members of the SS that took part in the purge of Ernst Röhm and other SA High Leaders were to be awarded an honour dagger with the dedication In herzlicher Kameradschaft Heinrich Himmler (In heartfelt comeradeship Heinrich Himmler).

As with the Röhm honour daggers, the Himmler honour daggers were identical to the regular Model 1933 SS service dagger except for the dedication on the reverse. It is estimated that approximately 200 members of the SS were involved in the murders of the "Night of the Long Knives". So it was long believed that only 200 such daggers were awarded. But because of the number of known daggers in collections today, it is now believed that there were between 1500 and 2000 such daggers awarded. These numbers are not cast in stone as there are no contemporary orders indicating the number that were awarded and many advanced collectors have their estimates as to how many they believe were awarded.

Unlike the Röhm honour daggers that were made by several firms, the Himmler honour daggers were only made by the Carl Eickhorn company of Solingen. As such, they are all identical. The Eickhorn firm used several versions of their maker mark during the production of Third Reich edged weapons but only the small oval trademark positioned very close to the lower crossguard is correct. Any deviation from the specimen pictured below can be considered a postwar reproduction.
